The numbers tell a story. Smoking remains Wales’ biggest preventable cause of illness and death, but progress is being made. This page brings together key statistics to help us understand where we are, and where we need to go, in building a healthier, smoke-free Wales.

Prevalence in Wales

Current smoking in Wales: 13% of adults (ASH Wales Annual Adult Population Survey 2025).

Current vaping in Wales: 12% of adults (ASH Wales Annual Adult Population Survey 2025).

Smoking is the single biggest cause of death and disease. 

10.7% of ALL deaths in over 35’s in Wales is due to smoking PHW 2020/22
