Tobacco Control Alliance

About

The WTCA is a powerful action group that works to monitor the evidence around tobacco use in Wales. The alliance monitors and supports progress made in relation to the Tobacco Control Action Plan.

The alliance will collectively call for a specific tobacco control policy measures or address a specific tobacco control issue. The views of the alliance are communicated to Members of the Senedd, Welsh Government, health bodies, the media and Wales’s Tobacco Control Strategy Board.

Principles of the WTCA

  • To be an inclusive, participatory body that encourages active engagement of its members
  • To be transparent and accessible, and to consult with its member organisations on proposed actions
  • To review the implementation of the Tobacco Control Delivery Plan
  • To identify areas of action to address health inequalities caused by tobacco use, and campaign for improvement
  • To monitor and discuss smoking trends and prevalence amongst the general population and specific groups
  • To identify and evidence innovative techniques to reduce smoking prevalence
  • To review latest evidence on all issues relating to smoking and public health

Who can join?

  • Membership is open to all third sector and professional body organisations in Wales whose remit includes a tobacco control focus or who work with those vulnerable to tobacco use
  • All member organisations are required to declare that they do not have connections, affiliations, or holdings with the tobacco industry or its representatives
  • Individuals are not eligible to join the WTCA, although they are eligible to join the Wales Tobacco or Health Network
  • Organisations must ensure delegates to the WTCA are sufficiently senior and knowledgeable to vote on coordinated policy initiatives of the WTCA
