Cannabis

Cannabis use in Wales is changing. Once associated with traditional smoking methods, it now includes edibles, vaping, and dangerously potent synthetic cannabinoids like Spice. These shifts bring new challenges and risks for individuals, families, and communities.

Let’s take a closer look at what cannabis is, how it’s being used today, and why understanding its impact is more important than ever.

What's The Issue?

Cannabis is no longer the mild, leafy substance it was decades ago. Modern strains contain much higher levels of THC—the psychoactive compound responsible for the “high”—and significantly reduced levels of CBD, which can counterbalance THC’s effects.

Stronger and Riskier: THC levels in today’s cannabis are often three times higher than in the past, making it more addictive and unpredictable.

Synthetic Cannabinoids: Products like Spice and Black Mamba mimic cannabis but are far more dangerous, with effects ranging from severe mental distress to life-threatening health problems.

Vaping and Edibles: Young people are turning to these methods because they’re discreet and perceived as safer, but they carry their own unique risks. Edibles, for example, can have delayed, intense, and long-lasting effects, leading to accidental overconsumption.

Why It Matters?

Health Risks
  • Prolonged use can harm memory, learning, and mental health, increasing the risk of anxiety, depression, and even psychosis. Smoking cannabis also damages lung health and increases the likelihood of respiratory issues.
  •
Youth Impact

Young people are particularly vulnerable, with cannabis use affecting brain development, motivation, and academic performance.

Dependency and Addiction:

Modern cannabis is far more addictive. Regular users can experience withdrawal symptoms such as irritability, cravings, and insomnia.

Legal and Social Consequences

Possession or sale of cannabis is illegal in the UK. A criminal record can impact job opportunities, travel, and life prospects.

Community Safety
  • The rise of synthetic cannabinoids presents significant risks, with unpredictable effects that can lead to emergency hospital visits.
