Activity at a glance

Best for

Helping younger children say no, ask for help and express their own choice with confidence.

You’ll need

The printable phrase cards, or a leader-read list of phrases.

Key message

A simple phrase can help you speak up when something does not feel right. If the pressure continues, move away and find a trusted grown-up.

How to run it

  • Explain that simple words can help us make our own choices.
  • Read these phrases aloud or show the printable cards:
    • I don’t want to.
    • Can I have help?
    • No thank you.
    • I’ll choose something else.
  • Ask each child to choose the phrase they like best.
  • Practise saying the phrases together.
  • Invite the children to decorate their chosen phrase card or repeat it using a clear, confident voice.
  • Try saying each phrase in different ways, such as quietly, clearly or with a strong superhero pose.
  • Explain that words may not always stop the pressure. Practise the next steps: move away, stay near safe people and tell a trusted grown-up.

Discussion prompts

  • Which phrase felt easiest to say?
  • Which phrase might help if something felt wrong?
  • When might someone need a brave phrase?
  • Who could help if saying the phrase did not work?
  • Can two people make different choices and both be right for themselves?
  • What could you do if someone did not listen?
  • Where could you move to?
  • Which trusted grown-up could help?

Reflection

Ask everyone to choose one phrase they want to remember. Finish by practising this three-part plan together: say it, move away, get help.

Link To Smoking, Vaping or Nicotine

Leave blank. This activity teaches an early refusal skill without introducing nicotine products to younger children.

Adapting the activity

Make it Easier

Choose one phrase for the whole group and practise it together.

Make it Harder

Ask the children to create their own brave phrase or choose suitable phrases for different fictional situations.

Safety Note

Do not ask children to share personal situations where they felt unsafe or pressured. Remind them that it is never their fault if a brave phrase does not stop someone. They should move away and tell a trusted grown-up.
