Best for

Giving young people a voice and using creativity to support others facing pressure.

You’ll need

Paper, pens, pressure cards and the campaign poster template.

Key message

A good campaign message can help younger people spot pressure and feel confident making their own choices.

How to run it

  • Explain that the group will create a campaign message for younger people about pressure linked to smoking, vaping or nicotine.
  • Ask each person or group to choose a pressure card or create a fictional example of their own.
  • Ask them to make one of the following:
    • Poster
    • Slogan
    • Postcard
    • Badge message
    • Social media-style post
    • Mini comic strip
  • Their campaign should:
    • Show one clear form of pressure
    • Be easy for younger people to understand
    • Help someone feel confident making their own choice
    • Avoid blaming or shaming anyone
    • Do not reproduce tobacco, vape or nicotine branding.
    • Do not create realistic packaging that could function as an advert.
    • Keep the message supportive and avoid blaming people who use nicotine.
  • Invite each person or group to present their campaign idea.
  • Discuss which messages felt clearest, most supportive and most memorable.

Discussion prompts

  • Would a younger person understand this message?
  • Does it show one clear form of pressure?
  • Does it help someone feel able to make their own choice?
  • Is anything unclear or missing?
  • Does the message avoid blaming or shaming?
  • How can influence be used to help people?

Reflection

Ask each group to name the one thing they want someone to think, feel or do after seeing their campaign.

Link To Smoking, Vaping or Nicotine

The campaign should focus on pressure linked to smoking, vaping or nicotine pouches. Young people could explore pressure from friends, appealing flavours, product design, social media, fitting in or claims that make nicotine products sound harmless.

Adapting the activity

Make it Easier

Give each group a pressure card and choose the campaign format for them.

Make it Harder

Ask young people to create two versions of the same message: one for ages 7–10 and one for ages 10–14. Compare how the language, design and level of detail change.

Safety Note

Use fictional, campaign-made visuals rather than real product branding. Campaigns must not shame, frighten or blame people who smoke, vape or experience nicotine dependence. No one needs to discuss personal experiences.
