ASH Wales has published two new 2026 research reports with YouGov, bringing fresh Wales-specific evidence on public attitudes, smoking, vaping and inequalities.

Public attitudes to tobacco and vape regulation in Wales

The 2026 survey of 1,119 adults in Wales found:

• 63% support progressively raising the tobacco age of sale for people born in 2009 or later.
• 86% support requiring businesses to hold a licence to sell tobacco.
• 80% support banning sweet names, cartoons and bright colours on vape packaging.
• 80% support banning vape advertising and promotion at the point of sale.
• 86% support some restrictions on vape visibility in shops.

The report also explores smoke-free places and public understanding of the relative harms of smoking and vaping.

Smoking and Social Housing in Wales

The second report focuses on the social-housing subgroup within the same 2026 survey. The subgroup has an unweighted base of 130 respondents.

• 28% reported currently smoking, compared with 12% across Wales in the same survey.
• 21% reported currently vaping.
• 23% said someone smoked in the home most days.
• 33% reported a mental-health condition they had received treatment for in the previous year.
• 8% said they may have bought tobacco that was smuggled or untaxed in the previous 12 months, compared with 3% across Wales in the same survey.

Health conditions and NHS waiting-list status in the report are self-reported and were not verified against clinical or NHS records.

About the research

The survey was conducted online by YouGov between 18 February and 19 March 2026. The total sample was 1,119 adults in Wales and figures were weighted to be representative of Welsh adults aged 18 and over.
