What did testing find?
National Trading Standards tested 76 vapes sold as nicotine-free to UK consumers. Ten of them contained nicotine.
The nicotine levels found ranged from 0.06 mg/ml to 27.02 mg/ml. All ten products that contained nicotine also held more e-liquid than is allowed for a nicotine vape. Two were over both the liquid-volume and nicotine-strength limits.
Why does this matter?
A vape labelled “0%”, “zero nicotine” or “nicotine-free” should not automatically be treated as proof that it contains no nicotine.
This is particularly useful for parents, schools and youth workers who may be shown packaging and asked whether a product is nicotine-free.
What don’t we know?
The ten products came from a group of 76 chosen for Trading Standards testing. This does not mean 13.2% of all nicotine-free vapes in Wales or the UK contain nicotine.
The testing does not tell us how common these products are among young people.
What should you do if you find an unfamiliar vape?
Do not open, taste or test it. Follow your setting’s safeguarding or incident process. If someone becomes unwell after vaping, seek appropriate medical help.
