Litter Heroes – EYFS – Smoking and the Environment

Free, practical material from ASH Wales. Find details, guidance and downloads below.

About this resource

This early years pack has been specially created to help 3-4-year-olds explore the idea of litter in a gentle, age-appropriate way, including smoking and vaping litter like cigarette butts and vapes.

Through story, song, and play, children learn the difference between natural ‘treasure’ (like leaves and feathers) and harmful litter. They’re introduced to three friendly birds, Sammy the Seagull, Ella the Eagle, and Penny the Puffin, who each discover different types of litter in their environment and help clean it up.

The resource includes:

  • Story about Sammy, Ella & Penny
  • Discussion questions
  • Song with Actions
  • Litter pick activity plan
  • Before & after activities
  • Litter Hero certificate

Who is it for?

  • Nurseries and pre-schools
  • Reception classes
  • Early years playgroups
  • Forest schools and outdoor learning
  • Settings supporting national or local litter campaigns
