6-methyl nicotine (6-MN) and nicotine analogues

Signal: Research / evidence · Evidence: Emerging · Scope: International · Family: Nicotine analogues

Date: 30 September 2026

What is being seen?

Nicotine-like chemicals including 6-methyl nicotine (6-MN) have appeared in international e-cigarette and oral nicotine-style products. These compounds are chemically related to nicotine but should not be assumed to have the same evidence base or risk profile.

What the research says

A 2026 peer-reviewed toxicology study comparing nicotine and 6-MN aerosols in a laboratory airway model found different toxicological and chemical profiles and concluded that 6-MN should not be treated as a safer nicotine alternative.

What we do not know

This is an emerging research signal, not a Wales prevalence estimate. We do not have good evidence that 6-MN use is common among young people in Wales, and international product availability should not be used to imply local uptake.

‘Nicotine-free’ and 0% vapes containing nicotine

SAFETY / COMPLIANCE ALERT
UK Trading Standards testing found nicotine in some vapes sold as nicotine-free. A 0% or nicotine-free label should not be treated as proof of contents.

Future nicotine formats: gels, creams and nasal inhalers

PRODUCT WATCH
Official explanatory notes identify gels, creams, cheek absorption and nasal inhalers as plausible future consumer nicotine delivery routes. This is a foresight signal, not evidence that these products are established in Wales.

Caffeine and energy pouches

PRODUCT WATCH
Nicotine-free caffeine pouches are being sold in the UK in the same under-the-lip format as nicotine pouches, including products containing high doses of caffeine.
